I actually got a decent amount of sleep last night thanks to a few Nyquil gel caps. I have not been getting much sleep and it makes it very difficult to to get my runs in when I feel so sluggish.
So even though it was pouring rain, I wanted to take advantage of the energy and get at least a few miles in.

Today was pretty busy client day so I only had about 40 minutes to spare for the run and post shower before I had to get back to work. That was enough time for a run to the park, two laps around the park and the run back. My time was ok with an average of 8:41 per mile. Not the best but it was positive enough to fell that I am getting back on track.

I head to Columbus tomorrow and look forward to getting in a few runs with my cousin while I am there.

Weather Rain

The weather was a bit challenging this weekend at the lake. It rained much of Saturday and most of Sunday limiting our selection of outdoor activities. On Sunday I slept in until almost 10 ( I guess I needed it) and was actually the last one up. The weather was still pretty bad 11am so I decided to get a few miles in before we tried to do any lake activities.

The rain was coming down pretty good during the whole run so I had to be careful on the hills to avoid slipping on the small rivers that were forming. The rain felt good and kept me very cool, but after a while my basketball shorts got so wet they were falling down. It was a bit distracting running with one hand holding up the shorts and the waterlogged shoes so I cut the run short after 2.5 miles instead of the usual 3.3 that the route takes me on.

Next weekend I will come more prepared with the correct shorts.

How’s Your Playoff Beard?

image

I have been working from home so much that I was able to get a good start on my Blackhawks playoff beard. Being Irish I have never been able to grow a very impressive face hugger instead having to settle for something that never quite fills in without at least a few sparse patches. I had a roommate in college in Colorado, yes you Kevin, who was able to grow very impressive facial hair in just a few weeks. Perhaps it was the harsh winters in Denver, his hometown that conditioned his skin to sprout full on protection. I must say, I will be glad to shave this off once the playoffs are over as I don’t look very good in one and summer in Chicago is not the time to have an extra layer on.

Weather Overcast – Warm

I had a really nice run with my sister in law up at the lake in Elkhorn Wisconsin today. It is always nice when you can share the run with someone else and it makes the miles go by quicker when you can have a nice conversation, unless your out of breath. We had planned to go for a run yesterday but by the time we finished with our chores, it was just brutally hot and we decided to enjoy the day swimming and playing with her kids.Lake House

Today was much cooler and a bit overcast which was perfect for running. There is a nice route we run that is just over 5K (3.3 miles round trip to be exact). It has a nice mixture of hills, curves and a long straight patch from mile 1.5 to the turnaround back to mile 2.

Mary had not run for a while so we decided to take it easy, which was fine with me as I have been slowing down a bit lately. I know it has to do with my lack of mileage but I found out it also has to do with the Nike+ module being out of calibration. I purposely brought the Nike+ and my Garmin 305 watch to see how far off the Nike module was.

Turns out at the end of the run, the Garmin said we ran 3.3 miles while the Nike module said we only did 3.18 miles. The Garmin clocked an average of 9.48 minutes per mile while the Nike put us in at over 9.55 minutes per mile. It’s not that big a deal but it looks like I am going to have to go to the track at the high school and recalibrate the foot pod to the receiver.

I Love Verizon

I reviewed my experience with the phone yesterday and want to talk about the service in today’s post. I came up to the lake last night after a quick run, some customer work, a visit to the post office to ship out two of our old phones to lucky eBay winners and a walk through the farmers market to get some roasted red pepper hummus for the weekend.

On the way to the lake I made a call to my friend Dave who is a dive instructor in Pompano Beach Florida. He runs a business called Aqua Safari Adventures where he teaches diving, does dive guiding and certification training. I took both my kids down to have them get certified with Dave as there was no one I would trust more in the open water.

I was on the call for about 45 minutes, from Downers Grove all the way to about Fox Lake and the call was clear all the way. At one point I had the handset on the dashboard on speaker (I have one of those little tacky non slip pads that you can lay things on so they stay in place) and was able to have a nice two way conversation with no issues.

When I arrived at the lake 2 hours and 15 minutes later (Memorial Day weekend traffic was brutal) I was anxious to test my Verizon service. I walked out the back of the house down by the lake and Holy Cow, Full bars!! In the house, full bars. On the pier, full bars. In the 27 years we have been here I have never been able to make an extended call anywhere but up the hill by the road. I tested the call quality by calling my son and then my daughter to tell them I had arrived safely. Both calls went through first time and were very clear. I can now call from anywhere on the property with crystal clear reception. I understand that ATT (Cingular and whatever else they were called back then) cannot have towers everywhere, but with the concentration of Illinois residents that come up here every weekend you would think they could do a little better.

We went into town tonight to grab some dinner before the hawks game. That gave me a chance to test the reception of the phone and especially the email and browsing capabilities.  Charlie O’s where we had dinner, has a policy of not allowing phone conversations in their restaurant, so I was unable to make a test call even though we were sitting outside. I must say, I like the no phone policy since one of the reasons I come up here is to get away from reality for a little while and being tethered to a phone does not promote the illusion. As soon as I performed three data tests, one SMS, one Google maps search and one web browsing session, I put it away for the evening. All three tests were fast, connected instantly and lefty me feeling very positive about the data capabilities at least in Southern Wisconsin.

So far I am feeling very good about my choice to switch to Verizon and yes I know you CAN hear me now.

This Is Almost Droid You Are Looking For

I have had the Motorola Droid for over two weeks now (still waiting for my HTC Incredible to come in) and I really like the phone but don’t quite love it. It is a slick, powerful, compact handheld computer that happens to make phone calls. Overall it is a good choice and a very capable Smartphone if you want one with a full keyboard. Unfortunately, I do not.

A few things that I like about it:

Speedy 600mhz processor
Lot’s of Great Applications
Beautiful 3.7 Inch Screen
5 MP Camera with LED Flash
Takes smooth 720×480 video
Speaker is loud and clear
Battery Life – I can get a full days use without recharging

What I don’t like:

Not a fan of a slide out keyboard
Too heavy
Camera – too slow to focus and take photos

This isn’t a full review as there are many reviews that you can find on the net rather just a few thoughts on how I feel about the device. I will do a full review on the Incredible when it finally arrives at my local Verizon store.

Android App For Activists

I came across a fantastic app yesterday on the Android Marketplace. The app is simply called Congress and it lets you see what bills are being presented to congress and by what senator. You can search by the latest votes to see if a bill has passed the house or senate, search by Just introduced to see the latest bills that require a vote and search by the new bills that have just become law. Each result has a summary of what the bill proposes and who sponsored it.

Congress App

One section of the app lets you search for your local representative to see what bills they have sponsored, any new about them, and it also contains contact information so you can call your representative directly, visit their website or see what committees they are a part of.

I spent a couple of hours last night just browsing my local representatives and was amazed at the amount of fluff that gets crafted and put before congress for a vote. A resolution to designate April 2010 as Notational STD awareness month? Come on. Don’t we have more important things to be spending our time on? Housing, mortgages, the economy, the war.

You can get the app from the guys over at SunLight Labs or via the Android Marketplace from you phone. Although SunLight Labs has wrapped all the data up nicely for us, you don’t need the app to get all this information. The bill data comes from www.govtrack.us so anyone can keep tabs on what are elected officials are working on or in many cases, not working on. Another interesting site is www.usaspending.gov which aggregates the data on federal spending for grants and contracts.

We don’t need to be passive when it comes to our elected officials. There is lots of data out there freely available to help you cast you next vote come election day. And you do vote, right?

Downers Grove Farmers Market 2010

Farmers Market1

I visited our local farmers market this morning and noticed it has grown to twice the size of last year. Although there are twice as many booths as last year there are not twice as many produce/farmers booths. It seems the village is allowing more and more non produce booths to be licensed alongside the produce, flowers and baked goods every Saturday.

Farmers Market2

Today I saw made to order crepes, purses, knife sharpening, a for rent portable barbecue/TV cart, ‘natural’ soft drinks, jewelry and children’s clothing. I don’t know if the village can’t get more types of produce vendors or if they are just trying to diversify, but I am tired of seeing crappy purse vendors at every event I go to. Even my daughters weekend volleyball tournaments have purse booths every weekend. There are plenty of places to buy purses other than the Saturday morning market. I hope this trend dos not continue and we return to what the farmers market should be, a market for farm fresh goods.

Star Wars Weekends 2010 Swag

Looks like they have some pretty neat stuff this year as far a merchandise for Star Wars Weekends. I have yet to attend due to schedule conflicts but we are planning a trip possibly next year for this event and the ESPN weekend event.

Most of the items they offer are limited edition and sell out very quickly. Some of the park goers are in line early at Hollywood Studios not for the rides but to make a dash for Boba’s Bounty and the Dark Side Depot to make sure the get the items they want before they sell out.

Dara Trujillo has an informative post over at her Disney Blog that has some photos of the new merchandise. Wish I could get down there this weekend and get my light saber on.
